Hey there, artists! Creating content is a huge part of building your career, but figuring out what makes it good can be tough. I'm Ben, and I've spent over ten years helping artists and labels craft strategies to stand out in today's fast-paced music world. Let's talk about how to make content that boosts your work and feels natural.
The Big Idea: Show, Don't Tell
Right now, I'm teaching you something specific, laying it all out. That's cool for learning, but when you're sharing your music, you need to go deeper. Those videos where artists say, "Yo, new song out, go listen!" often feel flat because they're just begging for attention. Instead, create content that pulls people in, inviting them into your world naturally.
Why Your Approach Matters
When you straight-up ask people to check out your music, it can make you seem less legit, like a pushy salesperson. You want to spark curiosity and make people want to dive in without you having to ask.
The Game Plan: Three Questions to Ask
Before you hit record or post anything, think about these:
Who are you talking to?
Get to know your audience: what they feel, where they hang out, what their day's like. The more specific you are, the stronger the connection.
What do you want them to feel or do?
You don't have to say, "Listen to my song." Show them why your music fits into their life with visuals or stories.
Why will they connect?
Your music should hit them emotionally and match their vibe.
Example
Say your audience is a guy, 18-24, feeling down because his friends are getting jobs and he's not. Learn what music he loves and how he spends his day. Instead of saying, "Check out my track," show him cruising in his car, your song playing, with lyrics that get what he's going through. That makes him want to be part of your world.
A Quick Tip
Don't assume you know your audience inside out. Dig into their interests and get feedback. Sometimes your music clicks with a group you didn't expect, and that can change everything.
Stay True to You
Make sure your content fits your artistic vibe. Chasing trends or throwing out quick posts can water down who you are. Your core mission is like your anchor, keeping everything real and consistent.
Wrapping It Up
Show, don't tell.
Be thoughtful about your message.
Skip the desperate, salesy vibe.
Connect through real, specific moments.
Keep rocking your journey! Want more tips? Stick around.
