Navigating DistroKid Payouts: A Guide to Tax Forms for African Musicians

For African musicians distributed through DistroKid, the excitement of seeing streaming numbers grow is often met with the technical hurdle of "Tax Interviews" and "Withholding Forms." Because DistroKid is a U.S.-based company, they are legally required to collect a W-8BEN form from international artists. This document ensures you are taxed correctly based on international agreements.
Failure to complete this form will result in the maximum tax deduction (30%) or, in many cases, a complete block on your payouts. Here is how to navigate it correctly as an African artist.
Phase 1: Your Pre-Flight Checklist
Before you begin the digital interview on DistroKid, ensure you have the following information readily available:
Full Legal Name: Use the name exactly as it appears on your National ID or Passport.
Permanent Residence: A physical address in your home country. P.O. Boxes are generally not accepted for tax residency.
Foreign Tax ID Number (TIN): This is your local government-issued tax or identity number. Examples include:
Nigeria: NIN (National Identification Number) or TIN.
Kenya: KRA PIN.
South Africa: SARS Tax Reference Number.
Ghana: Ghana Card PIN.
Phase 2: Step-by-Step Form Completion
Step 1: Identification of Beneficial Owner (Part I)
This section establishes who is receiving the money. Fill in your name and address carefully.
The "Tax ID" Trap: You will see a field for a "U.S. Tax ID Number." If you do not live in the U.S., leave this blank. Instead, find the field for "Foreign Tax ID Number" and enter your local number (NIN, KRA PIN, etc.). This is critical for proving your residency outside the U.S.
Step 2: Claim of Treaty Benefits (Part II)
This is where you tell the IRS if your country has a deal with the U.S. to reduce your taxes.
If you are from a Treaty Country (e.g., South Africa, Egypt, Morocco): Select your country from the list. You may be eligible for a reduced tax rate (0% - 15%).
If you are from a Non-Treaty Country (e.g., Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana): You must check the box that states: "I can't claim treaty benefits, so I'm not required to provide a Tax ID Number." While you still provide your ID, this acknowledges you will pay the standard 30% withholding on U.S. earnings.
Step 3: Review and Digital Signature (Part III)
Review the generated form for any typos. Typos can cause payment delays. Finally, type your full legal name into the signature box. By doing this, you are legally certifying that the information is true and that you are not a U.S. citizen.
Understanding the Financial Impact
It is important to understand that the "30% withholding" only applies to royalties earned from listeners within the United States. Your earnings from the rest of the world are generally paid out in full.
Country | Required ID | Standard Withholding |
South Africa | SARS Number | 0% - 5% (Treaty) |
Nigeria | NIN / TIN | 30% (No Treaty) |
Kenya | KRA PIN | 30% (No Treaty) |
Ghana | Ghana Card PIN | 30% (No Treaty) |
Pro Tip: Keep it Updated
If you relocate to a different country or change your legal name, you must submit a new W-8BEN form through the DistroKid dashboard. The form typically expires every three years, so keep an eye on your emails for renewal notices.
